Overview
Quelle qu'en soit l'issue, Charlie Chaplin se jette à corps perdu dans la lutte. Le résultat : un classique plébiscité qui trône depuis l'an 2000 dans le top 100 des comédies américaines de l'American Film Institute. Les Etats-Unis n'étaient pas encore impliqués dans la Seconde Guerre Mondiale lorsque Chaplin décoche ses flèches comiques et clownesques au Führer. Dans ce film, Chaplin interprète deux rôles : celui du nazi Adenoid Hynkel, et celui d'un coiffeur juif, qui ressemble comme deux gouttes d'eau à « der Nutsie ». A force de calembours, de gags visuels et de pitreries, Chaplin tourne le fascisme en dérision, mais cet humour laisse également la place à quelques scènes poignantes d'un ghetto qui frémit sous la terreur d'unités de choc impitoyables. Une foule de scènes inoubliables, entre autres celle de la danse prétentieuse de Hynkel avec un globe terrestre, la fuite sans dessus dessous, et le duel frénétique de chaises de coiffeur entre Hynkel et son rival mussolinien (Jack Oakie). Le Dictateur est le mariage parfait entre l'humour classique et l'émotion cinématographique à l'état pur.
